Dramatically set on the north shore of Lake Balaton in Veszprém county, Csopak is famous for its wine and beachfront. On a scorching June day, Anita and I wandered the town along narrow roads. As we moved ever higher up a gentle sloping hillside, views of the Balaton became magnificent. Central Europe’s largest lake glimmered like a turquoise mirror, with the Tihany Peninsula stretching across it. Tanned pensioners toiled away in their little gardens of lakeside paradise. Vineyards rolled down to the main road, their leaves the greenest green.
We left Csopak with a bottle of organic Tramini from the Tamás Winery. I snapped this photo, and we drove onward with a little taste of this enchanting place stashed away in our trunk.
